Why Dogs Are Popular Emotional Support Animals

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are on the rise with the increasing awareness about mental health issues. People who have been suffering from emotional and mental difficulties often find it hard to carry on with their lives due to the state of their mental health. These people often need emotional support from people they know and people they are close to. Incidentally, animals too tend to help these people cope with these difficulties. A pet dog for emotional support for example with the proper emotional support dog letter can help the person lead a normal life by providing unconditional love and non-stop support either during traveling by air or while staying inside the house.

Many people prefer to have dogs as their emotional support animals, more than any other pet animal. There are several reasons why a dog is considered a good emotional support animal, reasons which we will discuss here.

Dog-human companionship goes back thousands of years

Dogs have been living with humans as far back as 10,000 years ago. The dog-human relationship can take various roles, the dog can be an object of possession for some, a means of getting work done, and mutually dependent-equal companions for others.

The dog-human relationship has weathered thousands of years and is still one of the strongest human-animal bonds.

There are many dog breeds to choose from

Dogs were one of the first animals to be domesticated, whose breeding was controlled and whose feeding was provided by humans. The specialty in breeds over the past few centuries have given us fine breeds that were bred either for utilitarian purposes or for companionship purposes. The various control breeding means that we now have several pure breed dogs in hundreds including the various sized dogs.

To adopt a pet people have naturally more options when deciding to adopt a dog than any other animal.

People are accustomed to having dogs around them

The ESA animal should be accustomed to travel on the plane and that too in the passenger compartment. For any other animals, this can be a problem as people in the passenger cabin might feel reluctant to be around a pet that they are not accustomed to. If the ESA pet is a dog then naturally people will be at ease and instead will light up at having a well obedient dog accompany a person in the passenger cabin.

Dogs can be easily trained

Dogs are highly intelligent animals. This intelligence can be in terms of their heightened sense, their emotional acumen, their adaptability to new situations, and their obeying different commands. You can train your dog from puppyhood to get the best results. There are particular breeds in particular that can learn new things in a very low number of repetitions, breeds such as these are considered to be extra smart and intelligent. No wonder there are many dogs that work as working animals: doing police work, providing security, serving as a resume dog, etc. Some of the breeds that are known for their intelligence are poodles, labradors, german shepherds, papillon, border collie, etc. Moreover, an  ESA letter for housing and travel allows you to be with your pet in your house/ apartment and also be with your pet during your air travel.

Dogs have proved useful therapy and service animals

Dogs have higher emotional intelligence. Therefore, they can serve as service animals for the disabled and therapy dogs for those who would benefit from the love and affection that the dog provides. Providing comfort, affection, and support that isn’t something new to dogs; they flourish in such jobs as they love the attention they receive and are naturally inclined to please those around them. They are adaptable to new conditions and tend to judge the emotional state of the people, therefore making them the best ESA animals to have.
